Most long term residents in Pattaya reach a point where sorting out a Thai driving licence moves from “something to deal with eventually” to genuinely urgent. Whether you’ve been stopped at a checkpoint, tried to rent a vehicle or just want to drive with confidence, having a local licence makes a real difference.
The process is manageable but it has a few quirks that catch people out, particularly around documents and timing. This guide covers everything you need to know before heading to the Bang Lamung Department of Land Transport.
Important Before You Start
Booking an appointment is now required. Walk-ins are generally no longer accepted. You can book through the official system here.
If you are renewing your licence, you may also need to complete the official online training before your appointment. Requirements can vary depending on your visa, nationality, and current regulations, so it is always worth checking the latest updates directly with the Department of Land Transport (DLT).
Why a Thai Driving Licence Matters
Many people arrive in Pattaya assuming their overseas licence will cover them indefinitely. In practice, a foreign licence is generally only valid for short stays and usually only when accompanied by an International Driving Permit.
For longer term residents, the situation becomes less straightforward. Driving without the correct documentation can cause serious problems at police checkpoints and more importantly, can complicate insurance claims after an accident.
On a more practical level, a Thai licence is widely accepted as ID across Thailand, and most rental companies will expect to see one. If you are looking at vehicle options in Pattaya, whether that is a rental, a used car or a motorbike, having your licence in order is the obvious first step.

Getting Your Documents Together
This is where most people run into trouble. You will need your passport, valid visa and your home country driving licence. Bring originals and photocopies of everything as missing paperwork is one of the most common reasons people are turned away. Beyond the standard documents, there are two additional certificates you will need to obtain locally.
Medical and Residency Certificates
The medical certificate is straightforward. Most clinics in Pattaya can issue one on the same day after a brief health check.
The residency certificate is issued by Jomtien Immigration in Soi 5. It confirms your address in Thailand and typically requires proof of accommodation, your passport documents, and TM30 registration.
The critical detail is that both certificates are only valid for 30 days. If either expires before your appointment date, it will not be accepted and you will need to start again.
Why Appointment Timing is the Trickiest Part
To book your appointment, you are typically expected to present your documents to a clerk, who checks that everything is present and valid before scheduling a date. The problem is that appointment slots are often more than 30 days out meaning the certificates you used to book could expire before you actually attend.
The way most people handle this: obtain the initial documents, use them to secure the appointment, then collect a fresh set closer to the actual date so everything remains valid on the day. It is not the most elegant system, but understanding it in advance saves a lot of wasted trips.
Where to Go
You will need to attend the Bang Lamung branch of the Department of Land Transport, which handles licences for Pattaya and the surrounding area. It is located just off Highway 36, near the Regent International School.
Even with a confirmed appointment, arriving early is worthwhile as it gives you time to resolve any last minute documentation issues without the pressure of running late.
What Happens on the Day
Once your documents are accepted at the desk, the process follows a clear structure. If you hold a valid driving licence from your home country, you will go through a short series of physical assessments such as colour recognition, depth perception and a reaction time test. These are straightforward for most applicants.
Everyone then watches a road safety video (with English subtitles) and completes a short multiple-choice test. After that, you pay the fee, have your photo taken and your licence is issued, usually on the same day.
Do You Need to Take a Driving Test?
This depends on your circumstances, so it is worth confirming when you book.
If you are converting a valid foreign licence, a practical driving test at the transport office is often not required. If you do not hold a current licence from your home country, you will generally need to complete an onsite driving assessment on a closed track. This typically covers parking, reversing between markers and controlled starts.
A note on private driving schools. Some driving schools offer preparation courses that allow you to complete your assessment through them rather than at the government track. This is not a guaranteed option in every case, so confirm the details before committing to a course.
How Long Does a Thai Driving Licence Last?
Your first Thai licence is issued for two years. After that, you can renew and move to a five year licence. Additionally renewals are generally straightforward, particularly if you complete the required online training beforehand.
Car and Motorbike Licences Are Separate
In Thailand, car and motorbike licences are issued separately. If you plan to drive both, you will need to apply for both though many people complete both applications on the same visit. If you are considering a motorbike alongside a car, it is worth looking at both used and rental options in Pattaya once your licences are in order.
Need a Reliable Car or Motorcycle?
The Thai driving licence process is not especially difficult and the main challenge is coordinating the right documents at the right time. Plan around the 30 day certificate window, book your appointment as early as possible and arrive on the day with a complete set of fresh documents. Of course, once your licence is sorted, you are in a much better position to explore vehicle options and that’s where can help.
